Road tripping can be a major feat all on its own, but if you add toddlers to the mix??? Oh boy, buckle up haha. These tiny little ninjas can wreak havoc on a trip if you let them? Luckily, we have some tips and tricks to help you stay sane on your road trip!
Car Seat Tray
Car seat trays can help save your sanity as well as the carpets in your car. I ordered Everleigh’s on Amazon for $20 and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made! It unzips and folds down enough to fit behind her carseat when it isn’t in use. It also has a zipper compartment underneath that also stores a tablet holder that velcros onto the tray.
I always keep baby wipes as well as wet ones in my car (make sure to get the wet ones that are for sensitive skin, they’re safe for even baby use). You never know when your kid is gonna suddenly have a huge mess on their hands (literally) and always having wet ones and baby wipes will make sure you’re ready for any mess these little ninjas throw your way.
If you’re anything like me, you need a tablet on your road trips. Considering ours are usually about 12 hours long at any given time, we need entertainment. Just make sure that you download the movies your kids love before you leave the house. I’ve made that mistake before and it wasn’t pretty!
Toddlers Neck Pillow
The neck pillow will keep your tiny human from breaking their necks when they doze off. You know what I’m talking about. You look in the rearview mirror when the car is a little too silent and you see your kids chin meeting their chest. There are a lot of varieties of neck pillows, just make sure you’re careful if you choose one that attaches to the car seat itself. I’m always a little leery of adding anything extra to a car seat.
I know this seems like a given when having little ones in the car, but I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve forgotten one and stopped at the nearest drug store to pick a cheap one up!
Color Wonder Mess Free Coloring
These are the BEST when traveling(especially with toddlers). They have the markers that ONLY work on the color wonder coloring pages. We only ever travel with these, because we usually travel West or South and crayons have the tendency to melt when left in the car for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Regular markers are just a no no for obvious reasons haha.
Do you remember the bead organizers we all had when we were kids? Well let me just tell you that these guys make the perfect snack containers for toddlers. I never put anything in the containers that can’t easily be vacuumed up if there’s a spill, but they tend to latch pretty well and if you have the car seat tray, there aren’t many spills, if any at all.
If you get one that has a pretty good seal, then you don’t have to worry about anything going stale while your on your trip. I use these at the zoo or on the playground when I don’t want to lug around ziploc bags full of snacks or if I don’t have that kind of space.
A noggle is a must if you don’t have rear air. It’s a tube that runs from one of the front air vents and runs to the backseat to your kids car seat. They have a 6’ length for forward facing kids, an 8’ for rear facing kids, and a 10’ for 3rd row. (which isn’t a bad idea to have even if you do have rear air). You can get a noggle here!
Bring the Training Potty
I know this sounds silly, but how many times have you been in the middle of nowhere and your toddler suddenly has the urge to go to the bathroom and just absolutely CANNOT hold it? If you’re anything like our family, then that answer is almost every time we get into a car….
BUT if you’ll bring the training potty and line the removable bowl with a plastic bag and paper towels, you can stop pretty much anywhere. Once your kiddo is done, just undo the plastic bag and tie it up to throw away at the next stopping point!
Stop and Stretch
Plug playgrounds into your GPS and stop a few times along the way. Trust me. It’ll get everyone out of the car and it’ll wear the toddlers out. Even if you can only stop at a McDonald’s or a Chick-Fil-A where there’s a playplace, it gives everyone a break.
