With all the traveling Courtney and I are always planning, we need everything we can to save us the most money to cover all the things we want to do. These apps saved us tons of money while we were planning/in Europe. That’s why, this week, we are laying out our favorite travel apps that we NEVER leave home without!
I love to use Hopper! Hopper predicts prices and helps you book your flights and hotels at the right time. It could save you up to 40%! You chose the destination and date you are planning to travel, and Hopper will find you the cheapest flight available. You are also able to watch flights so you will get the cheapest flight possible. We’ve used this app to gauge when we need to buy our flights to know we’re getting the best price possible!
This app is very similar to Hopper. With Skyscanner, you can search for cheap airline tickets, hotels, & car rental. You can find the best time to book and set price alerts. On the app, you can explore domestic or international destinations. There are also recommended destination categories for quick getaways, longer trips, last minute, planning ahead, solo or family trip as well as the time of year.
GasBuddy is a MUST when your traveling by car. It gives you the lowest gas prices in the area that you’re in. They also have a debit card that links to your bank account (think targets red card debit card). Signing up for this debit card gives you 5¢ off per gallon, no matter what gas station you’re at. They also have what they call “gasback” offers. That’s where if you shop through the links provided in the GasBuddy app, they will give you from 1%-5% cash back in the form of gas discounts. You can join for free here. Make sure to use the code, EAXX4KG to get an additional 10¢ off on your first fill up!
Roadtrippers is an app that you can put your starting point and destination on the map, and it gives you all sorts of fun things to do in between. This is a lot of fun when you’re road tripping and don’t have a specific plan or itinerary. I’ve discovered a lot of cool places using roadtrippers!
If you haven’t heard of Travelzoo then you’re seriously missing out! Every Wednesday, Travelzoo sends out their top 20 deals of the week. This can range from deep discounts on Broadway shows and car rentals to MAJOR discounts on trips to top destinations around the world!
I feel like Airbnb is a given for everyone anymore, but it really is the way to experience places as a local. You have to option to stay in a private room, a shared room, a hotel room, or have the whole place to yourself. Plus, now that they’ve added activities, it’s a no brainer to have Airbnb on your phone!
We’ve only ever had good experiences when it comes to hotels.com. They usually have some of the best deals when it comes to booking hotels. Plus we’ve yet to be refused a room because we booked through a third party app and not with the hotel directly!
Viator is a must use if you like taking tours and doing scheduled activities. They always have sales going on, and you can always find something to do within your budget!
I just recently discovered Culture trip. You put your destination into culture trip and it gives you things to do that are off the beaten path (or super popular must do’s). It also gives you guides and tips, hotel recommendations, things to do and see, plus food and drink recommendations! You can’t go wrong having Culture trip in your arsenal!
Hertz is the most straightforward car rental company that I’ve ever dealt with. They might be a little more expensive than the other guys BUT they don’t charge an arm and a leg in holding fees and that can be a make or break if you’re traveling on a budget!
Apps We Won’t Use if We Can Avoid It
If you haven’t read our experience using Expedia, check it out here. After that incident, we are very reluctant to use this website and/or app.
I used to use this app/website a lot to rent cars and loved it! They have changed their policies and have found that the prices through here are no cheaper than anywhere else. Also, like Expedia, since this is a third party you could lose your reservation if it is overbooked.
