My family loves craft beer! Even my mom, who has always hated the taste of beer, has grown to love it. Thankfully, breweries are popping up everywhere. With so many different styles and flavors (pale ale, IPA, sour, cider, stouts, bourbon barrel, etc.), it’s easy to find one you love! Visiting my family in West Michigan always comes with going to the many different breweries in Grand Rapids. Known as Brew City USA, it is hard to decide where you must visit. Here are my top 9 breweries in Grand Rapids to visit while I am in town!
235 Grandville Ave. SW Grand Rapids, MI 49503
Starting off the list of my top 9 breweries in Grand Rapids is Founders. You can’t visit grand rapids without stopping here. With beer from founders being sold all over the country, getting it right from the brewery is delicious. They have several bars with seating inside and out so you are sure to have a great time!
925 Cherry St. SE Grand Rapids, MI 49506
Brewery Vivant brews farmhouse inspired beer and serves from-scratch meals (like duck craklin’ nachos). It is also the first LEED certified microbrewery housed in a refurbished historic funeral home in the East Hills neighborhood.
820 Monroe Ave. NW Grand Rapids, MI 49503
City Built just celebrated their 2nd anniversary with a huge bridge party! They have many unique beers made with out-of-the-ordinary ingredients as well as traditional ale styles. They also have a delicious Puerto Rico-inspired food menu. Be sure to check out their events calendar before visiting as they often have game nights!
1504 Plainfield Ave. NE Grand Rapids, MI 49505
Creston Brewery doesn’t list specific styles but created a scale based on bitterness, hoppiness, beer color, and maltiness. The inner icon on the wheel indicates the primary flavor and aroma for each beer and the outer wheel tells you they style scale. I had brunch there last year and still dream about the “beermosa” (beer + mimosa) and Nutella crepes.
527 Leonard St. NW Grand Rapids, MI 49504
The Mitten is located in historic Engine House #9. It has a vintage baseball-themed with tigers memorabilia all over the walls and stadium seats in the waiting area. They are not only known for their beers but also their pizza. You can get a flight of pizza and get 6 different kinds to try. It is absolutely delicious!
417 Bridge St NW Grand Rapids, Michigan
New Holand is located in the Knickerbocker so you will not only get craft beer but also a full drink menu with artisan spirits, handcrafted cocktails, wine, and cider. They have daily specials (drinks and appetizers) as well as a delicious food menu!
1 Ionia Ave SW Grand Rapids, MI 49503
Grand Rapids Brewing came about when six local breweries joined forces in 1892. It is built from reclaimed materials decorated by furnishings and artwork created by local artisans. Additionally, the brewpub employs recycling and composting program to prevent more than 90 percent of their waste from ending up in landfills and incinerators. With daily specials as well as a brunch/bloody mary bar, you can’t go wrong visiting!
5910 Comstock Park Dr. NW Comstock Park, MI 49321
Located 10 minutes outside of downtown Grand Rapids, Perrin Brewing creates regular favorites as well as an eclectic mix of experimental one-off brews and hard-to-find specialty batches.
9. ELK Brewing
700 Wealthy Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503
400 Dodge Street, Comstock Park, MI 49321
Ending the list of my top 9 breweries in Grand Rapids is ELK Brewing. ELK brewing has two locations, one located in downtown Grand Rapids and the other 10 minutes outside downtown just opposite the fifth third ballpark. ELK is known for brewing beers that push the standard of traditional styles. They are most known for their Dank-alicious IPA.
