I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I’m always looking for new tv shows to watch on Netflix. It’s really hard for me to find new things because my queue just wants to keep offering me the same shows over and over again. I know that you can get more personalized predictions if you rate your titles but sometimes even then, it just doesn’t give you enough variety. We’ve decided to give you our top TV picks for what to watch!
Riverdale is my new favorite show that’s still on the air. Netflix got the second season at the end of May and it was torture to wait. The show is based on the Archie comics, but it’s a modern day dark and twisty affair. It does includes all the original gang… Archie, Betty, Veronica, and my personal favorite…Jughead. Just a fair warning though…make sure you have quite a bit of time on your hands when you start this show because you won’t be able to stop watching once you start!
Ahhh Shonda Rhimes…this woman is amazing and she knows how to make a dang good show. She also knows how to get everyone right in their feels (so be aware). Grey’s Anatomy is rivaling ER when it comes to the longest running primetime medical show on the air. It’s a great show that always keeps ALL of your feels on alert lol. The show follows Meredith Grey and her journey through residency all the way to becoming an attending doctor. You follow her and her friends as they navigate their way through life at Seattle Grace Hospital.
Supergirl is a feel good superhero show that you don’t have to worry about censuring when your little ones are in the room or worrying about the violence level when they’re wanting to watch a “big kid” superhero show. It follows Kara Danvers and her life at Catco Magazine. She tries to balance her life as Kara and Supergirl and trying to keep them separate as much as possible. It really is a feel good show that is a refreshing change to most superhero shows on the air
Political dramas have been all the rage since Netflix dropped House of Cards. Not saying that all of them are on the same level as House of Cards but this one is pretty entertaining. This show follows Elizabeth McCord as she gets picked for Secretary of State. Once picked she’s determined to actually make her position count.
Arrow is one of the first superhero shows that the CW put on after switching from the WB (which had Smallville). It follows Oliver Queen and his journey to becoming “The Green Arrow”. He is constantly trying to balance his personal life and he duty to protect the people of Starling City. It’s a fun watch and you’ll definitely have your favorite characters very early in the show.
This show follows the BAU or the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI as they catch serial killers and other criminals alike. They do this by analyzing the crime scenes and the behaviors of the criminals. This show is one of my favorites and I can watch some episodes over and over again. The characters are all pretty great and you will definitely have your favorites pretty quickly.
This show is pretty odd but really good nonetheless. It follows Marty Byrde, a financial director, who up and moves his family to the Ozarks after his dealings with the drug cartel go astray. This one is definitely NOT kid friendly.
1 Season. Season 2 will likely air this October.
I LOVE this show. My cousin and I sat and pretty much watched it in one sitting. It’s based on the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. It revolves around Holden Ford and Bill Tench, the FBI’s first agents to coin the term “Serial Killer”. The agents, along with Wendy Carr, found the agency’s first Behavioral Science Unit. It follows as Holden and Bill go from prison to prison around the country and interview killers to understand how they operated in the hopes of establishing patterns to help catch future serial killers.
Now… I haven’t seen this show personally, but my aunt loves it and with watch it over and over again. Its main character is Dexter Morgan, who is a blood splatter expert with the Miami Police Department by day. By night though, he is one of the cities serial killers, too. Although his only victims are other killers. My aunt says that Dexter is a must watch if you love crime shows.
Jane The Virgin
Jane Villanueva thought she was going in to her GYN to get a normal examination… However her doctor was having a pretty rough day and accidentally mixed two of her patients up!! Jane wound up getting the wrong procedure done and now she’s a pregnant virgin!! Hilarity and hijinks ensue in this series as Jane tries to navigate her way around accidentally getting pregnant!
The Office (US)
The Office is quite hilarious as it’s made to be a mockumentary of the manager and his staff of Dunder Mifflin in Scranton. With Steve Carell, John Krasinski, and later Mindy Kaling you know that it’s bound to be funny!
Peaky Blinders follows Tommy Shelby and his gang in 1919 Birmingham, England who sew razor blades into the peaks of their caps. Tommy is young and hungry and is willing to do whatever it takes to move up in the world. Peaky Blinders is a great on the edge of your seat drama. Netflix knows how to make a pretty good show!
Somebody Feed Phil
Somebody Feeds Phil documentary following Philip Rosenthal and his journey finding the best eats in every corner of the world. He starts his journey in Bangkok, Thailand and goes from there and let me tell you that his show made me add Bangkok to my travel list! It also helps that he’s super funny and calls it like he sees it. If something isn’t good…he’s going to let you know! He also lets you know if something is the best thing he’s ever eaten (which he does a lot lol) Somebody feed Phil is one of Netflix’s better documentaries and that’s saying something because I love to watch documentaries!
The Vampire Diaries
This show centers around Elena. A young teen in Mystic Falls. It follows her in high school and as she meets the mysterious Stefan. She soon learns that Stefan is a vampire and that Mystic Falls isn’t all that it seems to be. This show ran for 8 seasons and I guess that there is always something to a show that can run for that long without being cancelled!
The Originals is a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries and I honestly like it better than the original show. It has more depth and storyline that The Vampire Diaries ever did in my opinion. It’s a really great watch and it will keep you engaged without beating the same storyline into your brain over and over again!
My mom used to watch this show back in the 80’s when it was on TV and she absolutely loves this remake! It’s a great show set in Atlanta following the Carringtons. They are one of the richest families in Atlanta and they own Carrington Atlantic. The show does a great job of glamming up what is essentially one big soap opera and makes you not want to stop watching! I think we watched all 22 episodes in 2 days, it was that good!
Lost in Space
This Netflix original is actually pretty good and it’s one for the whole family. It centers around the Robinson family as they crash land on an unfamiliar planet about 60 billion light years away from where they were supposed to be heading. The family tries to find other survivors on the planet and the reason they crashed in the first place, but the planet doesn’t make it easy for them in the slightest!
The Flash is one of my favorite superhero shows! It’s super light and funny. It centers around Barry Allen and his team as he becomes The Flash and fights metahumans around Central City as his day job is doing forensics for the Central City’s Police Department.
Bates Motel is super creepy and Freddie HIghmore couldn’t have been the better pick for this show! This show is a prequel to Psycho and shows how Norman Bates lived through his teenage years and how close (and creepy) his relationship was with his mother.
This Sherlock is BBC’s version and it’s fantastic. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman couldn’t be more perfect for their roles of Sherlock and Dr. Watson. It follows Sherlock and all his typical foes in and around modern day London. If you know anything about this show then you’ll know that this fandom is one of the most hardcore and hilarious there is…and with good reason. We had to wait so long for a few seasons and it made us quite crazy!
Luther follows Detective Inspector John Luther, played by Idris Elba, and his return to work after his traumatic arrest of a killer. He tries to navigate his way back to being back on the force and for John his work always comes first which can be a blessing and a curse. This show kept me on the edge of my seat and shouting at the tv the entire time I watched it.
Luke Cage is my favorite Marvel Netflix show. It centers around Luke Cage who was born and raised in Harlem. He’s an ex convict who keeps a low profile sweeping the floors in Pop’s barber shop. He’s got superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. He uses these powers to right wrongs when Pop is gunned down and killed.
Sons of Anarchy
I got Courtney to watch this show and I bet she cursed my name the whole time she watched it lol. This show is highly addictive and will definitely mess with your emotions on a level you didn’t know they could be messed with. It centers around Jax Teller and the SAMCRO bikers club. On the outside the club is on the up and up but inside the inner circle is a whole different story. Follow this crew and everything they get up to for 7 whole seasons!
2 Seasons (they’re currently filming the 3rd)
The first two seasons of The Crown focus on Queen Elizabeth II and how she came to take the throne and how she handled her first few years on the throne. The way they are basing the show, it’s going to go through a lot of the royal family. They just cast the third season and it’s going to introduce Princess Diana and follow her through her time in the palace! It’s such a good watch and Claire Foy and Matt Smith are absolutely amazing!
This is such a good show!! I have no clue why the heck AMC was thinking when they let this show go after 4 seasons! Nevertheless Netflix was very smart about the whole situation and snatched the show up without another thought. They then went on to do two seasons for themselves and did really well with it. It centers around Sheriff Walt Longmire and his crew in Absaroka County, Wyoming. They solve murders and take on criminals in town and out on the Reservation. It’s an absolutely crazy ride and it’s one worth taking!
Merlin was on the air for 5 glorious seasons. It was so good. It’s actually exactly like you’re thinking it is. It centers around Merlin when he’s a teen/ early 20’s and magic is outlawed across the entire land. He practices his trade in secret with the palaces doctor Gaius. He becomes Prince Arthur’s squire and they set off on crazy adventures where Merlin is constantly saving Arthur in secret. It’s a good watch but definitely bring your tissues for the last season!!
Greenleaf is a show created by Oprah. It focuses on a religious family in Memphis that hold horrible secrets. The family is reunited when one of the siblings takes her own life and her sister comes back home to set the record straight and get justice. This show touches on a lot of issues that we are always seeing within the church on the news. Oprah is afraid to touch on subjects that are hard or a bit controversial. She knows that they have to be discussed and she isn’t afraid to be the one who starts the conversation.
I love Parenthood. It touches on a family dynamic that you don’t get to see very often on primetime TV. It has a star studded cast and they all mesh very well and create this great family scene that you find yourself relating to whether you have kids or not. It’s definitely worth checking out for sure!
The Great British Baking Show
PBS knows how to make a great show too! From Sherlock to Downton Abbey and now The Great British Baking Show. I love this baking contest. It’s always set in a remote area in the countryside of the UK and it features bakers from all over. There are four seasons and I’ve watched them all twice!
I love Stranger Things and I don’t think anyone else besides Netflix could have done it justice! The storyline is great and it keeps you engaged for the entire season. I think my cousin and I watched the first season in one sitting! It’s so good and it’s really fun to watch it around Halloween!
