Let’s Get Kinky (Hair That Is)

Let’s Get Kinky (hair that is)

Having really curly hair, I feel like I’m always searching for a go to hair product that is actually going to work on keeping my frizz down without compromising my curl pattern or weighing it down to where I have almost no body (which if you’ve seen me and my hair you know is very difficult). I just feel like there aren’t enough decent curly products out there on the market for all us curly girls (and guys too! I’ve had some major hair jealousy over some of these guys curls!). That being said, I know the curly community needs some love!

Down To The Nitty Gritty

Ok…starting from the top…I have a few brands that I alternate between, but I will ALWAYS stick to something that has no sulfates or parabens. (y’all…the sulfates in shampoos are the same sulfates used in floor cleaners and engine degreasers…uhmmm no thank you!!). I love the Not Your Mother’s brand or OGX’s line. They’re relatively inexpensive, and a good way to go if you’re on a budget.

I’ve tried DevaCurl, but my hair didn’t respond well AT ALL!! I wanted to like it so much because it’s such a good brand, and it works wonders for so many people..but y’all… When I tell you my hair looked like I stuck my finger in a light socket from the time I started using it till I ended…I’m not kidding (I did stick it out for a month to give the brand an honest shot). I do, however, love their gels which are awesome and smell heavenly.

Another thing…ONLY WASH YOUR HAIR ONCE A WEEK!! Ladies, I know you’re thinking that I’m freaking crazy right now. Trust me!! Your hair will thank me! I only use actual shampoo once a week. I will use a co-wash every other day or sometimes just a light conditioner. When you shampoo your hair everyday, you are stripping all the natural oils out of your hair.

The Starting Lineup

I try to switch things up especially when I see a new product on the scene but my absolute go to’s that I know work for me are:

Miss Jessie’s Multicultural Curls Miss Jessie’s is awesome. She has tons of products for all different hair types. I tend to like the multicultural curls because it’s more like a creme base than a gel base which doesn’t make my hair “crunchy”

Paul Mitchell’s Fast Form Cream Gel (smells divine!). This is one of my favorite Paul Mitchell products. It’s a cream gel that sets your curls without the crunch and it holds pretty much all day.

OGX Renewing Moroccan Argan OilThis is a good lightweight oil. My hair is down to the middle of my back, and I only need a quarter size for all of my hair. (I never believe people when they tell me how much to use but I’m being honest lol) it also comes in spray form.

Biosilk Leave in Conditioning Spray (Biosilk is great not only for your hair but for your body as well..its really moisturizing and doesn’t leave your skin feeling weird or sticky like lotions can)

Jinri Professional 1875 watt Hair Dryer– I know this isn’t a hair product as much as it is a styling tool, but I stand behind a good diffuser…it heats using infrared and negative ions which creates frizz free results.

I know that I said DevaCurl didn’t work for me, but it is such a good brand. I included this link so that you can try it out for yourselves!

DevaCurl Kit for all Curl Kind– Here’s a link to a DevaCurl starter set that lets you try out their shampoo, conditioner, defining gel, and styling creme to see if you like it!

Guys, I know the hair product aisle can be daunting. Never be afraid to ask questions! Ask your stylist what products she uses in your hair when you get it cut and styled! Heck..I’ve approached women in the hair aisle and asked them what products they use! All in all…They’re your curls! Rock them! It took me a very long time to accept my curls as beautiful. I never want another person to have to feel that their hair isn’t awesome, curly or not!

We have tried OGX products (coconut and keratin) but not the argan oil variant. Will check it out. My daughter has curly hair so we are in the lookout for great products.

I’m always looking too! Especially when most products anymore are so manufactured!! I try to keep my curls as healthy as possible!

Heck yeah, rock your curls! I love reading what hair products other people use. I was all Ouidad for awhile. I discovered DevaCurl this past year and it works great for me. I have used OGX too and really like it.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Ouidad!!! It’s just so stinking expensive! I’m all about the sulfate/paraben free, good for your curls stuff, that anyone can buy!!

Like so many things, I think it’s all down to what suits each person best. We just have to go through the process of trial and error and go with what works best for us.
I used to spend so much money on products that people have recommended, Now I try samples first, then I buy if the products suit me.

The biosilk leave-in spray is my go-to as well! I also have curly hair (though mine is very fine) so it can be hard to find a balance between being frizzy and a complete mess.

I wish I had your problem, I have such fine hair! But it’s not straight so I’m always looking for products to protect it from heat damage.
